Crispy Mozzarella Sticks

Ingredients:
1 package (17.3 ounces) Pepperidge Farm Puff Pastry Sheets, thawed
1 egg
1 tablespoon water
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
1 package (12 ounces) mozzarella cheese snack sticks (12 sticks)
1 cup Prego Marinara Italian Sauce
Directions:
Heat the oven to 400F. Beat the egg and water in a small bowl with a fork or whisk. Place the Parmesan cheese into a shallow dish.
Unfold 1 pastry sheet on a lightly floured surface. Cut the pastry sheet into 6 (5 x 3-inch) rectangles. Repeat with the remaining pastry sheet, making 12 in all.
Place 1 cheese stick on a long edge of each pastry rectangle. Roll up the pastry around the cheese and press the seams and pinch the ends to seal. Brush the tops of the rolls with the egg mixture. Dip the tops into the Parmesan cheese. Place the rolls, seam-side down, onto a baking sheet. Prick the tops of the rolls with a fork.
Bake for 15 minutes or until the sticks are golden brown. Remove the sticks from the baking sheet and let cool on a wire rack for 10 minutes.
Heat the sauce in a 1-quart saucepan over medium heat until hot and bubbling, stirring occasionally. Serve the sauce with the sticks for dipping.

Hey....at least they are baked and not fried!!! you could sprinkle them with some seasoning rather than the Parmesan.....that would save some calories. Or you could coat them with bread crumbs or panko rather than the puff pastry to save calories (or even won ton wraps?) c'mon...if you are snackin on cheese, you aren't being too awful calorie conscious......even tho a mozzarella stick has only about 100 calories, in itself it's not a bad snack, but who can stop at ONE melty gooey hot mozzarelly snack dipped in marinara??? Not me!!! :0) lets face it.....weight loss/weight watching takes discipline......once ya get it down, ya got it ......it's a life long path; once you get on the right path, little detours don't cost you the whole journey. You can't take away ALL the sightseeing. Quantity or quality. ..it's all life.

You can dip part-skim mozzarella stick halves into beaten egg, and then dredge with Italian-style bread crumbs. Arrange in a single layer on a baking pan lined with aluminum foil. Spray lightly with oil spray (Pam). Bake for about 7 minutes in a 350 degree oven until they begin to brown. Stop before they flatten. Serve with a bowl of marinara sauce for dipping.

I love Mozzarella sticks, the only time we get them is at Applebees in the evening time they are half price. They are expensive little guys even buying them in the store they are pricey, I would have to check out the prices to see how much you could save making them yourself. These do sound wonderful.

celiaspivack is a spoilsport with her statistics.
Most people would know this is something that is eaten with pleasure as a treat and not as a staple in their diet. It would be great as a side with a hearty salad and a lovely glass of wine.
Campbells comes through again.
Um,um good,um um,good,that's what campbells soups are - um,um good !
As are all their traditional recipes.

exactly celiaspivack - usually the recipes furnish the stats, but this one didn't, so thank you for doing the due diligence and getting this info for us - better to have the info and know why you've gained 5 lbs.

I am sorry you feel that way. I think there are many people who believe that cheese is very healthful because it contains a lot of protein and that puff pastry must be healthful because it is baked, not fried. I would not agree. Both of these items contain a lot of fat. My point was that this is a treat (special occasion?) and is fine in moderation. I provided numbers so people can make decisions that are consistent with their personal needs and goals. These mozzarella sticks sound very good and personally, I would have no trouble eating a whole day's worth of calories if I weren't conscious of the nutrition info. I am not attempting to induce guilt in those who eat more than a moderate amount. I was simply offering my take and some data.

I am in recovery from an eating disorder where I starved myself for years. So I am at the point where I don't look at fat content so much anymore. I know some people have to, but I was killing myself from starving. I want to enjoy food!

HAHA.... must be why I'm so thin... I CAN'T eat dairy or bread; I'm allergic to it! The calorie content is enough for 2 meals... wonder why America has a weight problem??

I probably didn't HAVE to give you the info, but I just figured you could make better informed decisions if you know that just one piece has 17 grams of fat and has almost 58% of its calories from fat. If such information would actually give you pause, then I figure it is a service to tell you. If that info bothers you, please don't read the details. If you were looking for something with such a nutrition profile, now you know you have found it.

I was wondering, are these the actual numbers for the recipe, or for just the puff pastry?

Finally, a great easy recipe. Puff pastry? Well, all right! Fresh mozarella? Yum! And you don't just open a package, you actually create them. These look great, and I MUST try them. Thanks.

I think that fresh mozzarella balls (sliced) would be just right, not dry, super moist!
by BLIZZARINO
November 03, 2009
I agree, it seems to me that the prepared cheeses are on the dry side. I think cheese has more moisture when you cut it up or shred it yourself! But that's just me. Plus, I am all about saving a little money and doing it myself.
